WiFi & Router - parent guide
How to Block Porn on Your Home WiFi Router
Short answer: Start at the router. Router-level filtering helps protect every device connected to your home WiFi, including phones, tablets, game systems, Smart TVs, and laptops.
Why this matters
Many parents try to fix one device at a time, but kids often move to another screen. The router is the shared doorway. If the doorway is wide open, every device has a path out.
What to do first
- Log into your router or router app.
- Change the admin password so kids can't change settings.
- Turn on parental controls or family-safe DNS filtering where your router supports it.
- Block adult categories, proxy sites, VPN workarounds, and explicit search where available.
- Test the block on a phone, TV, console, and laptop.
Common mistakes parents make
- Only blocking one phone while the Smart TV or PlayStation is still open.
- Leaving the router admin password as the default.
- Forgetting guest WiFi, hotspots, and VPN apps.
